Visit Galveston, Texas and you'll definitely want to drive through the East End Historic District to view some beautiful stately homes. Homes that have withstood time, floods, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. There is one house that has been standing in Galveston since 1916 and it's once again on the market.

The 1916 Runge House, located at 1301 Market St., is once again listed and could be yours for just under $2 million. The home took its name from the original owner, Louis Runge, who lived in the Mediterranean Italian-styled villa for 70 years. The home is more than 6500 square feet and is spread out across three levels on a little more than a third of an acre. Built in 1916 this home features some outstanding craftsmanship and detailing from the arched windows to the crown molding to the wooden columns in the grand foyer.

Highlighted features of 1916 Runge House include:

  • elevator
  • hardwood floors
  • gourmet kitchen
  • custom patios
  • garden sanctuary
  • pool
  • modern amenities

The house has five bedrooms and five and a half baths. It includes a lush private garden sanctuary next to an in-ground pool. Being in either one of these spaces will have you feeling lost and not wanting to go back to reality.

The home remained in the Runge family until it was sold and purchased by UTMB in 1988. While in the university's control, it served as a residence for the university president and then the home changed hands three more times. In 2017 it underwent renovations to become a wedding venue (Houston Chronicle). Since 2021 it's been serving as a law firm (Galveston County Daily). What will become of this beautiful property is only up to the new owners. Will they have it as a permanent residence or purchase it and then list it as a historical house on Airbnb?
