The North American Scrabble Players Association has voted on banning 236 words that are offensive from their word list, per the New York Times.

CEO John Chew motioned the move on behalf of the Executive Committee in a letter:

I have felt for a long time that there are some words in our lexicon that we hang onto in the mistaken belief that our spelling them with tiles on a board strips them of their power to cause harm. When we play a slur, we are declaring that our desire to score points in a word game is of more value to us than the slur’s broader function as a way to oppress a group of people.

The list of words that are deemed offensive regarded ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, and disability - and not to mention anatomical and scatological insults.

The decision came on Wednesday July 8th and Hasbro the parent company backed the decision saying they are rooted in community and bringing people together, and they are committed to providing an experience that is inclusive and enjoyable for all.
