Death Penalty Sought in Texas Murder, Baby Theft Case
Montgomery County Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against a Houston woman accused of killing a mother and abducting her newborn son.
No trial date has been set for the 31-year-old Verna McClain, a licensed vocational nurse, who has been indicted on a capital murder charge for the April 17 slaying in the Houston suburb of Spring. She remains jailed without bond.
McClain is accused of fatally shooting Kala Golden-Schuchardt outside a pediatric clinic and taking her days-old son. The baby was found safe with a relative of McClain.
Investigators say McClain had a miscarriage and was desperate to find a baby to pass off as her own.
