The vast expanses of Texas have served as a backdrop for some fantastic horror movies.

Yes, one series is going to dominate this list, but it goes deeper than that. The rugged scenery and remoteness of some of these settings is perfect because the people in the movies that need help, are too far away to get it. Plus, that same remoteness leads to the strange behavior of the residents.  When you put it all together, Texas is home to some real horror classics, even if the movie takes place in Texas, but was filmed elsewhere.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The story has been told numerous times and with numerous sequels. What's amazing is the lack of blood and gore that you *think* is in the movie. T.C.M. builds it's story more with suggested violence and director Tobe Hooper did a wonderful job of it. I recognize some people have a problem watching "old movies" (T.C.M. was made in 1974), I personally enjoyed the remake in 2003 and the shorter titled "Texas Chainsaw" made in 2013. Also in this family of films are The Texas Chainsaw Massacre II, Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, Leatherface, The Sawyer Massacre, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022 remake) and Texas Chainsaw: The Beginning

Rob Zombies Best

Though filmed in California and Texas, House of 1000 corpses takes place in Texas. It's sequel "The Devil's Rejects" spells this out a little better with the events taking place in Ruggsville, Texas. The backdrops for this movie certainly look like very familiar Texas vistas as Otis, Baby, and Captain Spaulding try to flee from the law. Overall House of 1000 corpses borrows a lot from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, while The Devil's Rejects is more of a story of psychos on the run. One piece of trivia; The house used in House Of 1000 Corpses is the same house that was used for "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas.

The Best Of The Rest

The Town That Dreaded Sundown takes place in Texarkana and takes a few story cues "from True Events". The original is from 1974 and the remake is from 2014. Next on the list is "All The Boys Love Mandy Lane" which takes place at a "Texas Highschool" (or at least starts there). Wrapping up the "watchable" list are Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof and Robert Rodriquez's "Planet Terror" which were marketed together.  IMDB has a list of more Texas horror movies, but trust me, the pickin's are pretty slim from here!
