We are only four months removed from the beginning of March 2020, although it seems like many more months have passed since then.  It was at that time that something called the coronavirus was starting to dominate daily conversations.  Numerous events were put on hold, and then eventually canceled. One of those events was the Nacogdoches Pro Rodeo and Steer Show.

Actually, that's two events in one.

The Nacogdoches Steer Show stands alone from other 4-H and FFA related projects and competitions which are held during the Pineywoods Fair in October.  But sadly, with the 2020 cancellation of the steer show, some 30+ Nacogdoches County youths did not have the chance to show off the culmination of a year's worth of hard work and dedication.  Most importantly, there was no sale, no auction.  The thousands of dollars that each student spent on their project did not get recouped.  The scholarship money they were hoping to bank for college did not come...at least, not yet.

The Nacogdoches Steer Show committee realizes that the nearly $100,000 usually generated from the annual auction is not going to happen.  However, they are hopeful that a fundraising drive that runs from now through July 10th can accomplish two main goals:

  • Help the exhibitors make up at least some of the money spent on their steers
  • Show the kids that they have not been forgotten, show them that there are individuals and businesses in the community who have their back.

Through July 10th, you are encouraged to take part in the 'The Steer Show That Never Happened' fundraiser.  You can drop by a donation to any area participating BancorpSouth location.  No amount is too small, and certainly, no amount is too large.  You can contact BancorpSouth at (936)564-6191.
