I have been real cautious about my health as of late since the COVID-19 pandemic and I recently found out that one activity that I would usually enjoy could potentially put me at high risk of contracting the virus.
CBS 4 Valley Central is reporting a study from the National Institute on Drug Abuse that people who battle substance abuse like smoking cigarettes, marijuana, and even vaping could make them more vulnerable to catching the virus.
It caught my attention because I am a social cigar smoker, but I think about my family and loved ones who smoke a little more than they should.
Dr. Federico Vallejo who is a specialist with the South Texas Health System explained more about the study,
People that are chronic smokers with COPD for example or emphysema or bronchitis have a significant higher rate of mortality.
While I am taking extra precautionary measures to reduce my cigar intake I urge you who also engage in recreational smoking to curb your habit by following these few tips from Smoke Free.
• Chew gum, keep hard candy, and drink water.
• Go for a walk or jog
• Take slow, deep breaths
