We're about a month and a half away from school bells ringing again.

Kids wonder (and parents sometimes too), why summer goes by so fast. It seems as if it were yesterday that I was dropping off and picking my daughter up from school and here it is a month and a half away from the new school year beginning. Summer goes by pretty quickly.

We will soon be seeing signs in the mall, craft and grocery stores and other places letting us know about their 'Back To School' sales. As we walk into Walmart, Target, Hobby Lobby, Brookshire's and other places, we'll be greeted by the school supply shopping list from the surrounding ISD's with what they require their students to have on the first day of school.

To help offset some of those hefty school supplies lists, students and parents will be able to acquire some free school supplies during the #SchoolIsCool event at Harvey Hall in Tyler on Thursday, August 1st.

During this event two thousand free backpacks will be distributed to school-aged children that will be filled with school supplies to help them start out the 2019 - 2020 school year.

To make this event successful, organizers are looking for donations of the following items:

  • Glue sticks
  • Elmer’s glue
  • Facial tissues
  • Colored pencils
  • 24 count box of crayons
  • Child’s scissors
  • Ruled notebook paper
  • Spiral notebook
  • 3x5 Index cards
  • Composition notebook

  • Red pens
  • Blue pens
  • Black pens
  • #2 pencils
  • Pink erasers
  • Dry erase markers
  • Pocket folders with brads
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Ruler

Donations may be dropped off at the following Tyler Fire stations:
