The much anticipated action flick Proud Mary, starring Taraji P. Henson as a hitwoman, recently dropped a tantalizing trailer with imagery of Henson getting suited up in leather, heels and lots of guns.  The plot is centered around a hit woman working for an organized crime family in Boston, whose life is completely turned around when she meets a young boy who sparks her maternal instinct.

The Proud Mary movie poster also emulates the dangerously sexy style of 70's blaxploitation films starring Pam Grier like Foxy Brown and Coffy.  The artwork also seems to be an ode to blaxploitation and the unrelenting sexiness of women who do dirty work and, in this case, carry heavy weaponry.

To the tune of Ike & Tina Turner’s 1970 hit, “Proud Mary”, Henson, who plays a character named Mary in the film, takes viewers on a wild journey through the life of an assassin with a seemingly unlimited variety of disguises. Upon the release of the Sony Pictures teaser, Taraji took to social media, where she could barely hold her excitement. “I CAN’T STOP SCREAMING EITHER!!! #ProudMary,” she tweeted.

Henson signed the deal on this film during the same week Hidden Figures opened #1 at the box office last Christmas. Proud Mary is a testament to the talented actress' continued exploration of edgy, bold, and confident roles marked by her recent Golden Globe-winning performance as Cookie Lyon on FOX’s Empire, which has already been renewed for a fourth season.

The Sony Pictures film will also include How to Get Away with Murder's Billy Brown, Neal McDonough, legendary actor Danny Glover, Margaret Avery (The Color Purple), Xander Berkeley and Jahi Di’Allo Winston (The New Edition Story). The film is directed by Babak Najafi (London Has Fallen).

Proud Mary is set for a January 2018 release.
