The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is urging SNAP recipients to budget their benefits in February. The February benefits were loaded onto SNAP cards on January 20th, but may have to last a long time, while the government is still shut down, according to EastTexasMatters.com.
Families who rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will have to stretch their funds until the federal government reopens.
“Normally, benefits are staggered among recipients throughout the first half of the month. With this change, Texas will issue benefits early to approximately 3.5 million people across the state.”
The state is still accepting new applications, even though the Federal government, which funds 100% of SNAP benefits, is shutdown. However, after funding runs out, those applications will be in suspended status. As of today, the government has been shutdown for 31 days...and counting!
