(Dallas, Texas) - Change is inevitable and one East Texas University is preparing for a major rebrand.

Texas A&M Commerce has been growing at a rapid rate as it continues to serve rural and metropolitan East Texas. With an enrollment of approximately 13,086 students, the school is the third-largest member of The Texas A&M University System.

What is Texas A&M Commerce Changing Its Name To?

After several months of debate, the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents voted to change the name of Texas A&M University-Commerce to East Texas A&M University, effective immediately.

Although the name change is immediate, the university says it will have several months to transition to the new name.

Why Texas A&M Commerce Is Changing Names

According to an announcement by the Board, the change is meant to strengthen the university's identity and increase its regional visibility. The change also aims to reinforce the university's mission to serve the educational needs of rural and urban East Texas communities.

East Texas A&M offers classes online and on-site in Commerce, Dallas, Corsicana, McKinney, Mesquite, and Bryan.

A previous potential name change that had been considered was "Texas A&M University - Dallas", but was withdrawn from consideration after it received backlash and a signed online petition garnered over 9,000 signatures against it.

Where is Texas Commerce University?

The Commerce University, located 66 miles northeast of Dallas, probably wouldn't have made too much to be tied to Dallas and the "East Texas A&M" name began to grow with decision-makers after it was introduced as an option last month.

The transition to the new name will involve updates to the university's branding, signage, website, URL, email addresses, and communication materials over the coming months.
