(KNUE-FM) If you ask a group of Texans who the best college football team is in the Lone Star State, there is a good chance you will get lots of different answers. So many of the college football programs here in Texas have had success. But according to a new study, there is one Texas college football team that is the most valuable program in the country.

Where the Value Comes From

According to KXAN, if the Texas Longhorns were able to be sold on an open market, similar to NFL teams, the entire football program would be valued at approximately $2 billion.

The study was not done by someone at the University of Texas; instead, it was an associate professor of finance at Indiana University, Columbus. Although, his exact evaluation was closer to $2.2 billion.

Top 5 Most Valuable Football Programs

What was interesting was that the Longhorns had the only football program valued over $2 billion. It was also fun to see that the second-highest valued football program is also from Texas. We’re talking about Texas A&M estimated at roughly $1.59 billion.

The other schools in the top 5 include Ohio State, Louisiana State, and Michigan. All of those evaluations came in over $1.45 billion. The estimated values of these teams have increased drastically in the past year due to revenue sharing by schools with players and the transfer portal creating more players moving around.

Why These Valuations Matter

The Longhorns brought in approximately $289 million in revenue last year, which was about $80 million more than A&M. However, we all know the only way these evaluations will stay this high is if both teams continue to be successful. Let’s hope both teams have another year of great football teams.
