Earlier this week on my lunch break, I stopped by my favorite spot Uncle Jacks Kitchen. Since I got here, its safe to say that Uncle Jack and his family have adopted me and shown me so much love since I got here, mainly because we connect in so many ways, but on this particular day, I knew why he was my brother for real.

When I pulled up to the restaurant, before I could get out of the vehicle, Jack emerged out of the front doors as if he was expecting me, carrying what looked to be an order of food. Without hesitation, he jumped in the passenger seat and said "Take me over to the dollar store around the corner"....and without question, we left in the direction of his command.

As we're rolling, I didn't bother to ask where we were going or what we were doing, but Jack quickly told me to pull over before we arrived at what I thought was our destination.

There was a man who appeared to be homeless falling asleep on the corner next to a light pole. We pulled over and Jack gave him the bag of food that he had jumped in the car with.

"Here you go OG, take care of yourself."

As we pulled off, I smiled and gave Jack some dap and told him that's why he continues to be blessed. It also speaks volumes to how a community must look out for its own. It also reaffirmed my belief that we're building up something special in a part of the city many of you are starting to forget about: The Northside Of Tyler.

After spending several months on the other side of the city, I decided to move to the North side of Tyler where many of the city's older minority residents live. There's a movement of new energy and investment in revitalizing North Tyler, a place many consider "The Hood".

It's far from it. Yes, there are problems like everywhere else in the city but instead of complaining and looking past it, there are folks who are looking to change it for the better. Whether it's through new investments like the new Majesty Event Center venue, to restaurants and more entrepreneurs interested in development, I see the change coming.

And I'm happy to be a part of it. So don't be so fast to drive around the North side on the loop or on the tollway, come check out what makes it special it my eyes. One day I'll give you a tour.
