(Marshall, Texas) - A disturbing trend in one East Texas city is leaving victims and communities grappling with the consequences. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, hit-and-run incidents account for a significant percentage of traffic accidents statewide, with numbers showing a troubling upward trend.

These accidents often leave victims without accountability or justice, as drivers flee the scene to avoid legal repercussions. Pedestrians and cyclists are particularly vulnerable, with many hit-and-run cases resulting in severe injuries or fatalities.

While hit-and-run accidents happen regularly in urban areas like Houston, Dallas, and Austin, where the combination of high traffic volume and distracted driving contributes to the rising incidents, it's not expected in cities like Marshall, where police there are warning folks about the huge uptick in these type of accidents.

Marshall Police Posted A Warning About It On Facebook.

According to the post on social media, The Marshall Police Department has investigated two hit-and-run cases this week, leading to one arrest, and they received over 40 hit-and-run reports this year.

Marshall PD urged drivers to remain at the scene of an accident, regardless of fault. Fleeing can lead to felony charges, hefty fines, and potential imprisonment including:

  • Property damage over $200: Leaving the scene is a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,000.
  • Injury or fatality involved: Leaving the scene becomes a felony, carrying penalties of up to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Drivers who leave the scene but are later identified may be allowed to accept responsibility by voluntarily appearing at the Marshall Police Department. This option could result in a reduced charge, a ticket, and a fine instead of jail time.

Texans are reminded to prioritize safety by driving responsibly and reporting accidents immediately. For victims and their families, the hope remains that increased enforcement and public cooperation will reduce these tragic occurrences and bring justice to those affected.
