(KNUE-FM) There is a former Tyler ISD substitute teacher who was charged with an improper relationship who is now being ordered to outpatient treatment.

According to KLTV, a Smith County district judge has now approved sending a former Tyler ISD substitute teacher to outpatient treatment in Canton after she was found not competent to stand trial last week.

What Charges Does the Former Teacher Face?

48-year-old Karen Dunn of Tyler has been charged with sexual assault of a child and an improper relationship with a student. The court has previously ruled that Dunn was incompetent to stand trial. Ever since that decision was made, Dunn had remained in a state hospital.

Why the Court Approved Outpatient Treatment

Both prosecutors and the defense team in this case agreed that the state hospital was not helping, district judge, Taylor Heaton called this an “unusual situation” which ultimately led to all parties agreeing that the next best course of action would be to send Dunn to outpatient treatment at Andrews Center in Canton.

Bond Conditions Set by the Court

There was bond conditions set by the judge which include Dunn being prohibited from working around children.

The original arrest in this case took place in May of 2023 when Dunn was employed by Ramsey Elementary School as a substitute teacher.
