A few months ago, I learned about Longview's Unity & Diversity Committee after I attended their annual Unity Honors Luncheon. This group meets every first Monday of the month at Noon at the Longview Public Library and they meet to discuss how to bring about more diversity and inclusion in the East Texas area.

Through a press release The City Of Longview sent out, the committee is hosting a series called "Longview Listens"  which seeks to promote unity and diversity in Longview by creating a safe environment to include, inform, and celebrate all individuals through community dialogue.

The U&D Committee will kick off the series by hosting parts one and two of the Longview Listens on Thursday September 16 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at Maude Cobb Convention Center, 100 Grand Blvd.

Guest Speaker Terry Reese, a former McDonald’s executive, will be returning to discuss the topics of Stereotypes and Entitlement. Mr. Reese has held multiple positions throughout his career with the organization, including Vice President/Managing Director in South Africa and Vice President Training and Learning Development Global, covering 119 countries.

On September 16, Mr. Reese will provide a recap and combine the two topics into one session. Then, on September 23, he will complete the series with the topic of Rage at the same location and time.

Due to health and safety protocols, a total of 50 individuals are allowed to attend Longview Listens; this will be on a first-come basis. Masks and hand sanitizer will be available for anyone choosing to use these items. Tables and chairs will be spaced yet still conducive to fostering conversation around the topics presented. The first ten people that arrive will receive a book, recommended by Terry Reese.
