The Soul Train Awards have quietly emerged as one of the best awards shows on television.

Maybe it's Erykah Badu (who served as a producer and writer) whose flawless humor and innate cool as host elevates the show. Or perhaps it's because the show's programming doesn't seem to intent upon treading the same ground as other shows by pulling out the same five black performers. Instead, the show remains true to Don Cornelius' vision, and shines light on some of the best new voices of the day (Yuna, Ro James, D.R.A.M.), honors contemporary artists (India.Arie, Jill Scott, Eric Benet), while paying homage to those incredibly important to soul and R&B music (Teddy Riley, Brandy, Carl Thomas).

Last night's show was maybe the best so far, with dynamic performances from honoree, Brandy and Teddy Riley capping off an already great night. Check out the winners of the 2016 Soul Train Awards below.
