Wednesday (June 19th) is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day and the African American Cultural Events Committee (AACEC) is having a event for fellowship and fun to bring awareness to the  disease.

Join them at Woldert Park located at 701 W. 32nd Street in Tyler starting at 4pm as they commemorate individuals who have graduated from their fight with sickle cell and encourage other warriors to continue to fight the good fight with a balloon release.

According to Sickle Cell Society, Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects the red blood cells.  Individuals who have this disease have red blood cells that contain mostly hemoglobin S, and abnormal type of hemoglobin.

At times the red blood cells have become sickle-shaped and have difficulty passing through small blood vessels.

Sickle Cell Day means a lot to me since my sister has the disease and I have the trait.  I have seen first hand at what it can do so I am looking forward to celebrating her and all warriors of this disease.
