There's an old saying that death comes in three, but I was not expecting three individuals who helped shape my taste in R&B music would be in that number.

I don't know about you, but this Mother's day weekend was a rough one for the African American culture after three icons of R&B made their transition.

First during his Club Quarantine set D-Nice made the announcement that Andre Harrell the founder of Uptown Records and responsible for the careers of artists like Sean "Diddy" Combs, Mary J. Blige, Jodeci, Heavy D, Al B. Sure and Jodeci just to name a few passed away at the age of 59 years old on Thursday (May 7th).

Then Little Richard "The Innovator", "The Originator", and "The Architect of Rock and Roll" with with his famous saying A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-wop-bam-boom and hits like "Tutti Frutti", "Long Tall Sally", and "Good Golly, Miss Molly" passed away at the age of 87 on Saturday (May 9th).

Then on Mother's Day (May 10th) Grammy Award winner and R&B legend Betty Wright with classic hits like "Clean Up Woman" and "Tonight's The Night" made her transition at the age of 66 years old where her niece broke the news on Twitter.

So while the black delegation was mourning the loss of these icons all eyes were on Dallas native Erykah Badu and Jill Scott as they went head to head with their iconic Verzuz battle, but it wasn't even a battle it was more of a vibe session.

I was one of the 700,000 viewers as I was rubbing elbows with Swiss Beats and during the three hour match it was more of a celebration of music as they went "19 Rounds."

Some of the classic hits were "On and On", "Getting In The Way", "Didn't Cha Know", "Rolling Hills", "Back In The Day", "Slowly, Surely" and of course "Tyrone" to where Erykah's screen froze the irony and Jill stepped in and helped her sister by playing her track.

However, the most heart warming moment was when Jill Scott played "Crossed My Mind" because Swiss Beats had a conversation with Andre Harrell and mention how they enjoyed that song.

One word....Magical!

The unity of sisters showing love and vibing off one another was just what we needed to get through a rough weekend of losing such iconic figures of R&B.

Black Girl Magic has truly saved the culture and I would really love to see something like that again!
