Today (December 27) is the second day of the 51st annual celebration of Kwanzaa.  From the official Kwanzaa website, this seven-day celebration was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of African Studies.  During the holiday families, along with their communities’ plan activities around the Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principals)

  • Umoja – Unity
  • Kujichagulia – Self Determination
  • Ujima – Collective Work and Responsibility
  • Ujamaa – Cooperative Economics
  • Nia – Purpose
  • Kuumba – Creativity
  • Imani – Faith

Here is the second principal of Kwanzaa: KUJICHAGULIA (SELF DETERMINATION)

We light the red candle for Kujichagula, for "self-determination" this symbolizes the fight to preserve as we work hard to overcome discrimination and adversity in our day to day lives.  This is a call for African American people to define, defend, and develop ourselves instead of allowing or encouraging others to do this.

Practice KUJICHAGULA every day!
